Good Book......sad author July 15, 2005 15 out of 23 found this review helpful
A wonderful insight in what modern women may be thinking in the bedroom and demistifies their needs somewhat for the average male, looking to be a better lover for his love. a good place to start talking openly and frankly about fantasies and an oppertunity to spark things up again. Unfortunately you have to see past the sad author's view of men and her peudo-intellectual ramblings about weak men and strong women and how men are unable to fantasise about characters like madonna becuase she is 'too strong' in terms of image for men and how men want to put her and others in 'her place'. Sad that she's unable to present a book without subjecting the reader to her own insecurities, and over inflated ego that shields them.
Inspirational reading for anyone lacking confidence February 13, 2004 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
For all the failings it has (such as the lack of diverse sources, and Nancy's sometimes over analylitcal approach), this book does one thing..... it makes you realise that everyone has a diverse sexual imagination, whether they choose to act upon it or not. People who clearly would never 'behave in such a manner' in their real lives, are obviously just as interested as those who sleep with everyone they come across. In essence then this book encourages women of all ages, backgrounds and sexual preferences to realise they are 'normal', in as much as that 'normal' doesn't exsist. All the women in this book are linked by their fantasies but restrained by their moral backgrounds, religious beliefs and so on. I found it refreshing to read and it gives me hope that true emancipation may one day come into fruition.
A weak approach January 29, 2004 6 out of 16 found this review helpful
Sadly this volume deals almost exclusively with women in their teens and early 20s. You also have to be very open minded - a German Shepherd is the star of one fantasy, followed a few pages later by a dog called Butch! Perhaps the compiler needed more experienced women to talk to, because this just doesn't work.
Sexual liberation and fantasy. October 27, 2003 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Nancy Friday has written about women's sexulity for a long time. In "Women on Top", she writes about women's fantasies and there are a lot of fantasies herein. Be warned that some of the fantasies are extremely over the top and a bit icky. However, most of the them are interesting and it's always good to draw parallels between peronal ones and those of others. I would recommend this along with "Playtime" and "Against Love", two other books that deal very well with female sexuality.
Inspiring....why not? April 18, 2001 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I see now that lots of women have certain 'dreams' that are( by most) thought to be wierd. But it's time that we stop thinking about what others think and live our lives as we want because there's enough time for everything that we want to do only if we start it immediately. The book is inspiring for all those who feel they've tried everything.Let's enjoy, life's short if we are inventive!
